We propose opening with grades K–3 and adding one grade annually through eighth grade. Our school model combines strong academics, Spanish language acquisition through daily instruction, and real-world learning through MicroSociety. We also intend to pursue authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Our vision is guided by our motto: “Rooted in Community. Ready for the World.”
01
Spanish, every school day
At The Village School, we plan for every student to receive Spanish instruction every school day. By making language acquisition a consistent part of the school experience, we aim to give children meaningful opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write in another language as their skills develop.
Students would begin with age-appropriate experiences that build confidence and encourage participation, with learning becoming more complex as they progress.
02
Language with purpose
Our vision extends beyond memorizing vocabulary. We want students to use Spanish to communicate, ask questions, express ideas, and connect with others.
Planned learning experiences may include:
03
Opening doors to understanding
Learning another language offers opportunities to encounter different perspectives and reflect on our own experiences. We want students to approach unfamiliar ideas with curiosity, listen respectfully, and recognize the value of different languages and cultures.
We also value the languages children bring from home. Our Spanish program is intended to expand students’ opportunities while affirming their identities and existing language strengths.
04
Connected to our school model
Daily Spanish would complement our academic program and proposed MicroSociety model by creating opportunities for communication across subjects and experiences.
For example, students might practice greetings during a community activity, create bilingual signs for a classroom enterprise, or explore how people communicate in different communities. These are illustrative possibilities; specific learning experiences will be developed during curriculum planning.
Our language acquisition goals also connect with our intention to pursue IB authorization and our broader commitment to preparing globally aware learners.
05
What families can expect
- 1Daily Spanish instruction is planned for every student.
- 2No prior Spanish experience would be expected.
- 3Learning would be designed for children’s ages and developing abilities.
- 4Our proposed approach is daily language instruction, rather than a dual-language immersion model.
- 5Specific curriculum, staffing, and learning goals are still being developed. We do not promise a particular level of fluency.
The Village School
Rooted in Community. Ready for the World.
We want our students to feel connected to their community and confident exploring the world beyond it. Language acquisition is one way we plan to help them begin that journey.
